The city of Fort St. John is the major service centre of Northeastern British Columbia serving an area population of over 40,000. Young families with children make up the largest part of this city of 17,000 - a community with a very bright future!
Fort St. John is rich in resources. The region gives us a broad economic base: oil and gas, agriculture, forestry, tourism, and construction. We also have a skilled, productive labour force.
Oil and Gas
Known as "The Energetic City", Fort St. John is the service and support centre for the province's oil and natural gas industry. Exploration and production activity has been moving at a record-setting pace for the past several years with much of the region's natural gas deposits - estimated at among the largest in North America - still untapped.
Forestry
Fort St. John's 3rd largest industry, employing over 600 people. Forestry contributes over $90 million to the local economy with a 4.5 million hectare timber supply area. Fort St. John Forest District has planted over 50 million trees over the last 20 years.
Fort St John History
Perhaps more than many communities, Fort St. John's history is built on its economic potential. Possessing vast wealth, the region grew out of the grand plans of history's movers and shakers and the simple pioneer dreams of a better life in the untamed North. That spirit continues to this day.
Agriculture
Fort St. John Produces more Wheat, Barley, Canola and Grass seed than any other area in the province. Also found in the area is beef, dairy, sheep, honey, greenhouse and organic farming, and game farming. Their are over 800 farm families involved in farming the the North Peace.
